 Hi Everyone,
I feel the very same way about my high school, however, my elementary
school was the other side of the coin. I really was just sharing a
light hearted memory. But I just can't keep my mouth shut! My Catholic
elementary school was much different, it was racist, sexist,
hypocritical and mean spirited. And I believe, in my experience, most
Catholic school survivors mirror that same experience with both their
elementary & high school education, rather than the one Mary and I had
in high school. My school had the BVM's, Blessed Virgin Mary order,
while we referred to them as Black Veiled Monsters.
I totally brag about my wonderful Alvernia High School/Chicago, it was
the coolest and run by the strongest, open-minded, liberal women, who
have guided and influenced my life more than anyone else. I still see
women from that school - both teachers and students ... and there is
love!
Someday remind me to tell you how the nuns and teachers at Our Lady of
The Angels Catholic Elementary school had to come into class just to try
to back off of their out-right racism, when integration was inevitable.
I say this because the nuns & lay teachers had used the most ugly terms
in reference to our African American Sisters & Brothers, before that day
of reckoning!
Besides that the Catholic church doesn't much like my life style.
Proud to be an ex-Catholic and surprised to see a thread in reference to
one of my off-hand remarks!

Peace
Susan
