Yes, it is a Cuban song that was a hit in the US in the late '60s. 

I once worked with someone who used to sing it the way he heard it as a 
child, "Some kinda fella, for he be some kinda fella..." But thanks to Colin, 
I think I'll be singing "One ton of melons" from now on.
