At the risk of being unpopular in some circles around here, I must tell you
not to take to heart everything that some of the press screams out to work
people up. From my experience, (and maybe I'm just not up on other parts of
the U.S.) the United States is still the most open and free country in the
world. People's rights are not taken arbitrarilt taken away on a whim of
who gets to be president. The president does not have total dictatorial
power over everyone in the country - his ideal function is to "preside",
hence the root of his title. The Congress and the Legislative Branch (the
law) really make most of the actual decisions in this country. Even if you
get people on the Supreme Court who are "conservative" that doesn't mean
everything is set in stone forever. I don't know of any current rights that
any Supreme Court can take away from people. And if some people want to
enlighten me, go right ahead. We are a progressive and diverse country,
that certainly has its share of bad people, but ultimately the power lies
with the people. The people make our country go around regardless of, or in
spite of, the political powers or party that hold office at any given time.
To me, the main thing we need to be concerned about with our Federal
government is that they don't over-regulate (micro-manage) us and thereby
kill our incentive and spirit, and that they don't get us into needless
wars.
