welsh soprano dame gwyneth jones turns 64 today. when she turned 60, she
sang salome in buenos aires. i gave her a big chunk of amber [i can't
remember why --maybe it was her birthstone or maybe because ambar is
supposed to protect against envy and throat ailments]. the stone was in a
very nice box, wrapped up in fancy paper, ribbon and all.
dame gwyneth, who was wearing an emerald necklace that had belonged to la
malibran, a 19th century opera diva, looked at the thing and said, ''i hope
