I think it's reasonable to wonder what people use "individual rights" for.
Hasn't your life experience testified that in the West anyway, there appears
to be an innately competitive aspect to human nature. Every generation has
been the "me" generation, not just people who act more hedonistically than
others.
If a society acts to blunt some of the effects of competitiveness, I would
not immediate condemn that society.
