i took the questionmark out of the title of this thread.

>To the Mitchell song, a biography of a disillusioned romantic, she brings
just a
tinge of dramatic expression and a dry touch. Although its music is
distinctively Mitchell's, hearing LuPone's interpretation makes you see the
connections between the bruised wisdom of Mitchell's storytelling and the
similarly dry-eyed emotional textures of Stephen Sondheim.

the times review was very complimentary as well. talked about how lupone
can tear the roof off a broadway house, but stayed on the delicate side with
this concert. i'd certainly prefer that. it said she sang joni mitchell,
but not what song. as described, this renditions sounds delicious! she
also sang 'my best to you', which i assume is the same sons of the pioneers
song joni covered. i bet patti lupone has been listening to joni all along.

the reviewer is not doing his/her homework; there's no 'holy toledo' about
this. i'm so happy that 'time after time' is quietly becoming a standard.
i think the first cover of the song i heard was by tuck and patti, and it
was sublime. i've never heard miles' but i love cassandra wilson's version.
but why this comment hit so close is i've lately been just transfixed by eva
cassidy's version. it's the title song of another posthumous album, that i
think is as strong and as well assembled as any of her collections, with the
possible exception of 'songbird'.

i've been introducing a lot of people to eva lately. and her music is
digging deeper and deeper into my heart.
