There's an interesting counter story. I was reading a rock and roll anecdote
collection and Joni was doing a concert at a prison in California, (perhaps
San Quentin?). The crowd was no collection of ladies who burp discretely and
she got disgusted and upset with the crowd and chided them to get into the
mood of the music.
The inmates were reportedly less than appreciative of her performance and
things went over poorly because she failed to read or understand her audience
although she had no problem bursting into righteous anger.
Joan Baez followed Joni's performance and reportedly had them all eating out
of her hand.
