Megan-I left an important bit out.MOTIVE is evrything. If we help people out of a
desire
to feel better, that is elfish and will rebound on us in that what we get back will
also
come from a wrong motive. However, when we act out of compassion with no thought for
ourselves, then we get back somethbning good. So even we act unselfishly, we still
reciebve. Strangely, the more we act unselfishly the more we benefit!
It is natural you would gte a high from helping som one. Yiu are human as you said.
But I
am sure that was not your main motive. I help thru a helpline for survivors. i do it
cos I
have been there and I know how little help and understanding there is. i too get a high
when i feel I have helped change someones view of themselves. But that isn't the
motive.
It is the side effect.
12 step groups are fond of saying that you can't keep what you have unless you give it
away. i have found that to be true. It wouldn't work to go around giving it away JUST
because you want to keep it.
This is much easier to undrtand inside than it is to explain in words!

ps I happen to think nursing is a most undervalued but most valuable proffession. It
attracts the right people. it also attracts those with low self esteem who do it in
order
to feel good about themselves. This is when it rebounds on them negatively. This is not
you!
