Since this is the birthday greeting that brought the biggest smile to
my (gasp!) 47 year old face, I really do need to come out of lurker
mode, and even add some Joni content to the message.
First, Wally, you're a sweetheart to compare me to Napoleon Brandy.
Though I guess it's a very aged brandy, isn't it? But on to the Joni
content. My sister, Karen, called me last week to say she was going to
see k.d. lang in Denver, and because Karen's new beau knows her pedal
steel player, she'd get to go backstage. I asked her if his name is
Greg Liesz, and she asked me how I knew, and I said Greg Liesz had
played with Joni on TTT and PWWAM and was in the band when Karen flew
to LA for one night in '98 to see Joni, Van and Dylan at Pauley
Pavilion with me.
Anyway, when Karen met Greg, she told him she had seen him 2 years ago
when he played with Joni at Pauley Pavilion. She said his face lit
up and he became very animated, and told her playing with Joni was
different than playing with anyone else, because Joni is truly an
artist and instead of giving him specific instructions about what she
wanted, she encouraged him to be creative and make his own contribution
when he played with her.
But, thanks again, Wally, you birthday angel.
