Jumping into the thread late...
I've heard of people sometimes having better results
with the blue or clear recordable CDs when compared to the
"old" green ones.
(I'm taking about the colour of the see-thru bit, not the
metal in the CD itself.)
Certainly I don't have any problems in anything I've tried,
except for a very old 80's CD player. I can even write
blue (no! not *that* sort of blue) video CDs and play them
in my DVD player.
I should add that I always record audio/video stuff at
1x though, which may also help.
