I was listening to Electric Landlady [sic] when I read your email - I still
am, and it's actually even better than I'd remembered. My Affair had me
dancing around my living room, and We'll Never Pass This Way Again is playing
as I type this. Have you got Kite? That's a terrific one, often mistakenly
thought to be her first; in fact her debut was Desperate Character, which
came out in about 1981, and included There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop
Swears he's Elvis and They Don't Know, as well as a lovely rendition of the
Beach Boys' You Still Believe In Me. I don't think it's ever been reissued
on CD, and the vinyl is mighty hard to get hold of.
It seems so sad that some people only get the recognition of which they are
worthy after their death (this was certainly the case with the stellar talent
of Eva Cassidy); still, I like to think that people will continue to discover
Kirsty's singular talent for songwriting, her lovely voice, and her
formidable knack for glorious, multi-tracked vocal harmonies, which she
invariably wrapped on the first take.
If anyone on the list has never heard her (maybe apart from Fairytale of New
York, which is IMHO the greatest Christmas single ever) and would like a bit
of advice, do feel free to email me privately.
