hi

i picked up 2 joni references in tv movies recently:

the first one was about a week ago. i got home, switched on my tv, & the
credits were rolling the song playing was a cover of "twisted" and i was
shocked & horrified to find that they changed the lyrics from "the idiomatic
logic that went on" (i *love* that line) to "the reasoning and logic that
went on" (bland, boring & doesnt quite fit(well, thats my opinion )) -
perhaps they thought that people wouldnt understand it????

unfortunately i didnt get the artists name, or even the movie name - in my
defence i can only invoke the classic *pink floyd defence* - "i don't know,
i was very drunk at the time"

the other one i caught last night. being bored while waiting for "south
park" to come on, i was watching a most ridiculous *m-tv* movie called "200
cigarettes". in one of the scenes with one of the characters whining to his
female friend about his love life - he made a comment along the lines of
"you finally commit yourself to live with someone & a month later you're
eating macrobiotic food & listening to joni mitchell" to which his friend
responds that he should avoid domineering & emasculating women.........

are joni women "domineering & emasculating" or are m-tv men wimps : ) i
wonder..................

this from a tv station that has to put little snippets of text across the
bottom of the screen while showing music videos, because a) the music is too
boring to keep anyones attention and b) the average attention span of its
viewers is less that the length of the average music video anyway??????????

also, it occurred to me that ive been posting to the list & never
introduced myself, as i see new members doing. sorry if i breached
netiquette - i dont really have much experience with lists.

so heres a quick intro:

i live in cape town, south africa, & have been a joni fan since the late
70's/early 80's. my first album of hers which i bought was shadows & light
which i absolutely adored, and i quickly added court & spark, ladies of the
canyon, hissing of the summer lawns, & wild things run free.

kind of threw my friends a bit - they were all listening to punk/reggae/new
wave/pop & i was listening to joni mitchell. janis joplin, jimi hendrix,
joan baez (also jim croce - with all those "j"'s - could it be something to
do with all the joints i was smoking at the time?)

later additions were turbulent indigo (i love that album - magdalene
laundries is one of my all time favourites) and taming the tiger(i havent
quite got to grips with it yet - but still working on it)

i kind of eased off for a long, long time, till this year. i did a quick (2
day) trip to london/hackney, (which, believe it or not, was my first ever
overseas trip). while i was there i met & really hit it off with an amazing
woman, & spent two wonderful evening in her company, sharing things i never
ever dreamt id share with anyone - & i didnt even know her name!!! ( we were
introduced, but i didnt bother to listen cause i really didnt think it would
go anywhere..........)

leaving her was not easy.............the flight home that night was
seriously depressing

at the duty free at heathrow i decided i wanted a souvenir of my trip, so i
picked up a copy of "blue". when i got home the next morning i put it on &
heard "this flight tonight" and it was just so appropriate.... i was
gutted. it remains a very significant song for me.

anyhow - it kind of re awakened my interest in joni - feeling a connection
with her again - so i suppose some good came out of it. since joining the
list ive picked up hejira, and ordered the shadows & light cd (my old vinyl
copy is beyond repair)

so anyway - happy christmas/x-mas/hannukah/eid/holiday/whatever to everyone
on this list!!!!!!

you guys really have something very, very special & warm going here
