According to the liner notes for Rhino's "Troubadours of the Folk Era,
Vol. 1," Ewan MacColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" was
premiered in 1962 by Kitty White. The Rhino collection's version, also
dating to 1962, is performed by Ewan MacColl's wife, Peggy Seeger, and
is accompanied by Ewan on acoustic guitar. Although CDNow lists a
zillion recordings of this tune, Peggy Seeger's lovely rendition is
probably as close as we shall get to what was originally conceived, and
can be sampled at CDNow (only on WindowsMedia format).
