>>Speaking of covers, another one showed up in the mail today..."Urge For
Going" by Wally Whyton. I thought it was a new version (like Luka Bloom's)
but it is actually a CD re-issue of an album called "It's Me, Mum" which was
released in 1968. Seems that Wally started playing skiffle music (like The
Beatles) and brings that sensibility to UFG which is a very peppy version.
The CD re-release has lots of liner notes, but no JC. There was a strong
relationship between George Hamilton IV and himself, which explains his cover
of UFG. Apparently Wally Whyton was a very popular folk star in Britain in
the 60's...Steve Dulson, do you have any insight? Folk + Brit = Steve D! :~)<<
I remember Wally Whyton, Bob, but not so much as a British folk star as a
presenter of childrens TV when I was very young. He did sing and play guitar
but what I remember most about the program was the puppet who appeared with
him who was known as Ollie Beak! Despite being a close follower of the
British folk scene, I don't recall him having much of a profile on it. I am
sure, however, that he would appear regularly on childrens TV with the famous
guitarist Bert Weedon author of Bert Weedon's Play in a Day guitar tutor
which got so many budding guitarists started in this country. I met someone
recently who knows Bert pretty well and said he was still on good form.
I had no idea that Wally had recorded UFG - how interesting!
