Ooooh, no! The people he has chosen may be culturally diverse, but he
hasn't done anything to "unite" not "divide" in his choices - many of whom
are *extremely* right wing. Ashcroft for example - besides being a
fundamentalist to the point where he believes dancing is sinful (remember
"Footloose" anyone?), he opposed a black man's nomination for the federal
bench, calling him "pro-criminal" because a few times Ronnie White had
chosen to overturn the death penalty (note that multiple other times he did
not overturn the death penalty)... hmm... pro-criminal? What the hell is
that? Or is Ashcroft trying to keep African Americans out? There is a lot
more about him, but I won't go into detail here.
There is a very interesting article about Ashcroft at tompaine.com (which
is fairly left-wing) - the opinion in the article is definitely
anti-Ashcroft but you can make your own judgment about the information they
present. Of course I know someone is going to jump in and support Ashcroft
now but I just have to say that someone with close ties to Pat Robertson,
who is significant financial support by the religious right, who has spoken
out strongly against gays/lesbians and abortion (to the point of no
compromise with the Republican party when they tried to adopt a platform
that was diverse on the abortion issue)... that person is not someone I
feel comfortable with as attorney general.
And don't get me started on Linda Chavez. Yes she is a woman. Yes she is
Latina. Great. She also is anti-labor and against the minimum wage - she
once basically called a minimum wage Marxist (with utmost disgust). Is she
going to be good at her job? Will she serve the interests of working
people? She isn't very sympathetic to them.
As for Spence Abraham as Sec'y of Energy.... He tried to get the Dep't of
Energy dismantled, so there is an interesting appointment.
This whole thing sucks.
