Yes, the Byrds did perform at Monterey. But Neil Young had just left
Buffalo Springfield and Stephen Stills asked Crosby to play with them. From
his (Crosby's) autobiography:

"Alan Pariser was one of the originators and backers of the Monterey
International Pop Festival. I had heard about it all through its evolution
as it grew from an idea into a real event. The Byrds were still working
together as a band and we agreed to appear. Neil had left Buffalo
Springfield and the band was wavering; Stephen asked me to work with them,
which was fine with me because Stephen had great songs. I heard him writing
"For What It's Worth" in my house, playing those guitar licks. I knew the
man could write incredibly well and that had always been bait I had to take.
I couldn't resist a good hook. I started hanging out with the Buffalo
Springfield. <snip> The Springfield had a short half-life, about a year
(March '67 - May '68). Before they finally came apart, they asked me to be
in the band. I went up to Monterey to play with them; I was a Springfield
for a short while."

Me again: I've got the video of the Monterey Pop Festival and still get
shivers at Janis doing Ball And Chain and amazing everyone there. There's a
great shot of Cass Elliot in the audience mouthing something like "Wow,
that's incredible"!
