Neither the character nor the visit were imaginary.  She did
visit bluesman Furry Lewis (since deceased), who later publicly
dissed her in Rolling Stone, calling her 'that woman' and complaining
about her portrayal of him in the song.
Trivia extra: Lewis is in the Burt Reynolds movie called
(I think) WC and the Dixie Dance Kings...which I haven't
seen.
