I don't think anyone covered this yet. The patriarch of the Staple Singers, Roebuck "Pops" Staple passed away on December 19, 2000, in Chicago at the age of 84. He lead his musical family to carry the message of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement in America. If you've ever heard or seen "The Last Waltz" by the Band, you've heard "Pops" in action. He takes a verse in "The Weight". More importantly, he and his daughter Mavis sang "Respect Yourself". (Mavis Staple- OMIGAWD!) Sample lyric: "If ya disrespect anybody that ya run into (why) do ya think anybody's s'possed to respect you? If ya don't give a heck about the man with the bible in his hand, just get out the way and let the gentleman do his thing. You the kinda gentleman that want everything your way. Take that sheet off your face, boy. It's a brand new day. Respect yourself. Respect yourself. Respect yourself." Thank you, Mister Staple. You helped to leave America a little better than it was when you found it. Lama np: "Respect Yourself" Hey, if *I* can dance to it, *anyone* can. A protest song with an incredible groove. Give it a 10!
