My brother is holidaying in India at the moment, and was only 300km away
when the earthquake struck. Having lived in Wellington (which is overdue
for "the big one") he knew what was happening straight away, and got out of
the decrepit building he was in - having first convinced the other tourists
that this was in fact an earthquake, and there was considerable danger.

Luckily (for him) the building remained standing, but he said the quake was
over 2 minutes long. Those of you familiar with earthquakes will now that
is a VERY long time. He emailed us as soon as he could, to let us know he
was OK.

It's horrible to think of the number dead, injured and homeless in India,
but at the same time, I'm pretty thankful that he was far enough away to be
safe.
