I've always interpreted this to be about Chuck Mitchell. He was much more
of a folk purist than Joni. She got rich and famous, and he kept on folking
along. Based on some of Joni's comments, I have guessed that he had a
somewhat judgmental streak and could have demonstrated "contempt" for Joni's
music (this may be wildly unfair to Chuck; I am only going on Joni's
comments in interviews). It's true that this song was written many years
after the marriage ended, but Joni does seem to have a long memory!
> "And you were in the parking lot
> Subterranean by your own design
> The virtue of your style inscribed
> On your contempt for mine"
>
> Are these lyrics about Dylan???? Just something that has perplexed me...
