If a CD is labeled HDCD it means that the CD is of high quality.
The HDCD process came along after some of the bugs in the CD creation
process were worked out. For example, I believe that all of Joni's HDCD
releases were created from the original 2 track tape. (In the old days of
CDs, the record companies often used dubs of dubs called production masters
to create the original CD.)
You can play a HDCD on any CD player and it will sound great.
If your stereo costs as much as a car, you may hear some additional benefits
if your HDCD is played back on a player with HDCD decoding.
