Having just listened to all of Joni's albums , unlike the way some People
criticize an Artists work, I think that an artist like Joni should be
criticized on her own work and only her own work. In so far as I dont think
there should be a top 10 , more like a top 4,
1/ "Hejira" and "Blue" by a country mile, Taking in to consideration the
lyrics, the Melody, the Instrumentation and the Playing and lastly the
Emotion of Joni's performance on her songs. Jaco's playing on Hejera is one
of those rare moments where two artists are brought together and spark magic,
And "Blue" is a rare Jewel of an album that has had me in tears for as long
as it has been released.
2/ "Miles of Aisles" and "Hissing of summer lawns" , the live album with her
statement about "Vincent Van Gogh" before the start of one of her songs pure
magic, their is an atmosphere on the album, that conveys the warmth of her
personality for posterity, and "Hissing was a whole leap into the dark that
dragged her fans with her into her new musical direction, an amazing album.
3/ Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" this album has always been one of my
favorites because of "Jaco Pastorious's" Bass playing, but ( having a very
sophisticated CD Player & Hi Fi that had the "HDCD" chip on it ) when I heard
"Paprika Plains " for the first time on the HDCD disc I was totally blown
away by this track how wonderful it is you can listen to her piano playing
and the strings in a new light, and the song is about her Indian roots its so
emotional, it makes me think what she could have done with the Pat Metheny
band backing her on a whole album ie some of her songs drifting into
Instrumental music, the rest of the album is great to and its one of Jaco's
best albums as well.
4/ THE REST :- I mean all her albums are great i wouldn't place any of her
albums lower than 4 , some people are going to say well " For the Roses" is
her best but if you play " Blue" then play "Hejira" one after the other all
the way through, then play "For the Roses' I think you'll know what I mean.
thanks for reading my Letter. Andrew Neave
