RE:
Tyler (et. al)

I have a student from Ethiopia, and I asked him about
Mahmoud Ahmed. I
laughed when he told me he was an old guy who owns a
restaurant in
Ethiopia. He said if you like his music to also try
Tilahun Aesese and
also Aster
Awake. He claims they are even better.

Thanks for the suggestion!
I have actually heard Aster Aweke. She is very good,
much more contemporary than Mahmoud Ahmed (the stuff
i've heard of his has a definate 60's-70's soul groove
along with the middle eastern melodies). I'll try to
check out Tilahun Aesese, although I'm finding
Eithiopin music to be fairly hard to find in the U.S.
Your student woulden't know where to find it here,
would he?

I am on another list and sent e-mail to a Brazilian
list member inquiring about Tropicalia music, which
has a bit of a cult following here in Chicago. Got a
similar reply-to him, Tropicalia in Brazil is like the
Beatles or Hendrix here-something his parents listened
to when he was a kid, but seems old to him. I must
say, though, that the couple of old Caetano Veloso
discs i have are really good!
