Someone might think that the reference was to just one occasion, in which 
case the correct tense would have been 

"I didn't know I had drunk such a lot."


"I didn't know I drank such a lot" sounds ironic...i.e., "so you really think 
I drink a lot, eh?" and refers to ongoing behavior.
