After re-reading it, I realized it could be construed as terse and angry but it's not. It's just a response and if we were in the same room, I'd be smiling through most of it. On 3/13/01 3:01 PM, Vince Lavieri wrote > When I go to to baseball games at my beloved Comiskey Park, I see some fans > wear shirts that say "Cubs Suck." I would never own or condone wearing a "Celine Sucks" t-shirt but I should be allowed to respond to a statement that "the majority of Canadians" like Celine Dion. > We are here as Joni fans. Why trash on someone else? Why define ourselves > by who we don't like? Each of us is the sum total of many likes and dislikes. To define yourself by your likes alone is to turn a blind eye to a significant part of your make-up. > There are over 800 members here, and some of them are bound to be Celine Dion > fans. Why insult them? I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I think it's a safe bet that many on this list consider watching a show like this a waste of time. Am I insulted? Not at all. I like it, they don't. End of story. >I suspect that is why some people lurk, because they > see their own personal likes and dislikes treated condescendingly. As you said, they all have "likes and dislikes". Stating a personal like or dislike is not de facto condescension. > > I am not a Celine Dion fan but I cannot fathom why I or anyone would waste > time to insult her and demean her and her fans. That's like wearing a Cubs > Suck t-shirt. I disagree. We are sharing our likes and dislikes in an open forum. I've learned that Celine Dion singing in French may be a very different experience. Wearing a Cubs Sucks t-shirt allows no room for discussion. >That is defining yourself, and spending a lot of time defining > yourself, by what you claim you don't like. Not much time spent, really, and I still stand by that claim. > I am here because I am for Joni. You are not alone. The love of Joni brought us all here and from that starting point we've grown into a diverse family whose members don't always see eye to eye. I'm extremely grateful for that. The give and take of opinions on this list makes it one of the most interesting aspects of my life. With feelings of friendship and in the spirit of this list Ranger Rick
