hey, folks, those food coloring, oil and water light shows are not dead yet.
just last fall, i attended a concert of hendrix songs, produced by danny
kapilian (who produced the joni's jazz concert in central park, '99) that
had a 'summer of love' light show.

the hendrix event had projections by one of the creators of the original
fillmore west shows. the name escapes me, but this guy is definitely still
around, though he's sort of establishmentized (i've also seen his
projections in an installation at SFMOMA, within the last five years.) the
show felt pretty familiar from films of the psychedelic era, lots blobs of
colored oil vibrating on water, lots of double exposures, etc. etc. kind of
cheesy and stupid in places, the projections looked very analog but
computers were involved in the projection process; i kept seeing the
hourglass icon across pure '60s psychedelica as the computer tried to cope.
bizarre anachronisms. total buzzkill, dudes...

not a very successful concert either, given the high standard kapilian has
set. some wonderful moments, though. sandra st. victor was my hero, and
her 'are you experienced?' was my highlight of the evening. i loved
medeski, martin and woods, for sheer musicianship the whole night.

patrick, blathering on again.
