I don't know the answers Anne, but this made me think of a line from
Emmylou's song 'The Pearl':

We lift up our prayer against the odds
And fear the silence is the voice of God
of God
of God

I consider myself a spiritual person but not a religious person.
Usually I don't cotton much to specific references to a specific
faith. But I love this song. Especially that last verse:

Like falling stars through the universe we are hurled
Down through the long loneliness of the world
Until we behold the pain become the pearl
The pearl
The pearl

Maybe that's what we're meant to do in this life. Turn our pain into
something beautiful. I like to think that's what happens when we die.
