Are the bars in her head those of incarceration?
I just love the diversity of thinking on this list. For me, the bars
in her head are music bars. I have a friend who is a really excellent
trumptet player, during the days of coke-induced frenzy he would write
music prolifically. On playback, when everyone was rested and
straight, these pieces were full of long, sharp, staccatto type
passages almost "frantic" in their phrasing and would make me feal
uneasy. I always imagined Edith high on coke, music playing in her
head and that music being much like my friends coked-out offerings.
Regarding his crime belonging I felt that perhaps among those people
who enjoyed the coke-high, the "Kingpin" (supplier) always "belonged."
Also that the wires in the wall that were "humming" were those of the
phone-tappers listening in for incriminating evidence.
Just my take.
Cassy
