Here's my explanation: There are many primitive native cultures that
believe that they can communicate with the gods and "other" worlds
through the smoke of their medicine pipes.  The smoke actually carries
the prayers and thoughts into the ethers.  
Oh yes, I also think it is one of the last forms of social rebellion.  Sue
