I've always thought of those bars as having several meanings, or,
rather, invoking several images. Some of it may seem strange... 

First, bars of music.  

Second, bars of a cage - with the Kingpan as the cat, focused and aloof
("purring, all claws for now withdrawn") and Edith as the bird --
beating frantically, blindly against the bars trying to get away.  They
stare eye to eye like predator to prey - the predator not wanting to
look away because she might escape and the prey not wanting to miss the
first strike.

Last and a bit less literal, the bars in her head are, really, only in
her head.  She's not trapped but she thinks she is.

Just some random thoughts on a beautifully gray day . . .
