Bob said I bought "Izitso" & "Down to Earth", both of which I would call "later"
records, when they came out & they both sucked major root!
Ouch Bob... thats a bit scathing. :( ;)
Les said I'm with Bob... I think Cat's last good album was "Foreigner". Beyond that,
I could barely listen to them.
IMO >> Izitso and Back to Earth are certainly not Cat at his greatest. The general
consensus amongst Cat fans is that he peaked round about Tea for the Tillerman in
1970. The follow up Teaser & The Firecat is also highly regarded by Cat fans although
personally my favourite is Mona Bone Jakon. Catch Bull at Four which followed in 1972
was probably his last great album. In the later albums you have to look for little
gems like I never wanted to be a star on Izitso (runaway from the music biz?) and a
marvellous final track on Back to Earth called Never. But the last two albums do
appear to be his weakest as he was distracted by more pressing matters. << IMO
Dont forget Cat finished with music in 1979 so we shouldnt be too hard to judge him
on his final output. He may have gone on to greater things. Imagine if Joni had
finished with Mingus and Wild Things Run Free. We wouldnt have had the chance to
judge her on all her later stuff.
Relayer, if you havent already got it I would go for Mona Bone Jakon. Its worth it
for the track Trouble alone.
Listening to Cat's lyrics it's easy to see Cat and Joni as 'Twins of Spirit..no matter
which route home they take...or what they forsake.' :)
