We're getting to know our new neighbors and invariably the subject turns to music. I boldly survey their CD collections within minutes of walking through their door (what better way to surmise their taste?) Earth, Wind & Fire, Beatles, Tom Waits, Neil Young and lots of 70s Motown. It doesn't take long before I bring up Joni. Lou confesses that one of his best male buddies is a die-hard fan, but he's not familiar with her music. I suggest that we do a music exchange - six for six. I bring him Hejira, Neil's "Silver & Gold", Mavin Gaye & Tammy Terrell, Billie's Silver Collection on Verve, Stevie's "Music Of My Mind" and Crosby/Pevar/Raymond Live at the Wiltern. I borrow 3 Beatles and CDs of 70s soul music and load up the CD player in the car. A week later we return the respective CDs. Lou gives me all but one. "Leslie, would you mind if I kept Hejira a little longer. I've listened to it several times and I'm not ready to return it yet." Amen. Enough said. Another convert to the church of Joni. Leslie
