my greatest love of joni's music has to be don juan's reckless daughter... ...i think it was the perfect follow-up to the polish of hejira...it compliments it...somehow completes it...diving artistically into a swirl of cutting edge, risk, depth, adventure... ...it seems to me to be a place where everything goes right for joni...musicality, variety...it doesn't lean too much to pop and yet it isn't inaccessible... the originality is awesome...very distinctively 'her'...and fittingly it is the album where she gives a name for herself in the album title...a kind of creative signiture...as if she were saying 'this album is me'...she really isn't afraid to go anywhere in it...she is 'on a roll' you might say...she is shining, jaco is shining...the drummers are shining... i may love individual songs more sometimes elsewhere...but as they ask the guests on CKUA saturday mornings which they would take with them to a desert island...you know the answer for me... ...for what its worth... shane http://www.angelfire.com/art/cactussong
