Actually, I can date it back to as early as mid-1967, when Micky Dolenz 
played it on the Monkees album "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, and 
Jones".  From the liner notes on the reissued CD:

"Micky Dolenz's use of Robert Moog's synthesized keyboard on this track 
marked the first time the instrument had been utilized on a mainstream pop 
record." Although I'll admit it certainly wasn't an "artistic" use of it as 
the notes continue "He had no idea how to play it; It was just random, hit 
and miss kind of stuff".

Still, as a 10-year old kid I thought it was damn cool.  :-)
