Lots of interesting discussion lately on 70s classics vs. 80's experiments.
Though I said the other day that WTRF and DED can hardly compare favorably to
C&S and Blue, I have to add now that I have always enjoyed the 80's work
immensely, especially CMIARS, perhaps largely because of the complexity and
quality of the production. So I wouldn't necessarily rank the 80s work lower
in terms of its importance to me, though I recognize it doesn't seem to have
the lasting impact of the classics (yes, this is hard to explain....)
Also, many of you may be interested in a special concert series coming up
during much of the rest of this year: The Judy Collins Wildflower Festival,
featuring Judy, Roger McGuinn, Janis Ian and Richie Havens (and perhaps
others). Go to judycollins.com or janisian.com for a schedule. I saw Judy,
Janis and Roger in a similar show three years ago in Seattle and it was
fantastic. Judy is a still a captivating performer (and when in good voice a
helluva singer still); Janis (a long-time favorite of mine) has become a
kick-ass guitar player and her voice has grown stronger with age; Roger plays
a phenomenal 12-string guitar and sings Byrds and folk-rock classics. Not so
familiar with Richie, but I'm sure he'll round out the show well.
