I'm not at all convinced that Dylan was the "first
person" to actually bring more challenging, deeper
emotional material & free expression to the world of
the popular song.
What I think history shows us is, we were even then a
culture of celebrity, and that Dylan was the first
artist to "make it big" doing such material naturally
garnered him the credit for it's invention.
It's still a point capable of question ...
