A few weeks ago when Kate and Jeff were here playing at Victor's one of the highlights for me was getting to hear someone as authentic-sounding as Jeff sing in that low drawl... it's a very familiar yet distant sound, distant in the sense that it's hard to believe that there are people alive today who sing like that, and not just to be heard on old records... I was scratching me head for a long time wondering where I'd heard that sound before, not just in the sense of the genre, which is everywhere or was at one time, but in a more specific sense... This week I figured it out while I was listening to Sugaree and the Dolphins and The Other Side of This Life.... Jeff really sounds quite a bit like Fred Neil. At least I remember it that way.
