This feminism thread has been very interesting. It always bothers me that
the "f" word has gotten such a bad rap. Most political movements have a
radical (and usually angry) faction; one that really makes waves and "gets
in people's faces." Unfortunately, later on, these are the people everyone
focuses on in a negative way. (e.g. Rush Limbaugh's term "feminazi") It's
sad because they are the people that are instrumental in getting the
movement noticed and then we end up being embarrassed by them. Lesbians
were very vocal and a major part of the early feminist movement and now
everyone thinks that if you are a feminist, you must be a man hating dyke.
The gay rights movement is much the same. How many times have we heard,
"It's okay if you're gay, just don't be so vocal about it?" I admire people
who have the guts to be "out there." It's not easy.
