Dear listers,
Just had to write to say what wonderful, gracious and
talented people abide here. David and his lovely wife
Judy opened their club to us and we were treated to
some fantastic music. I had the pleasure of seeing
Leslie and Steve Mixon perform for the first time,
as well as Kay Ashley.
David's friend Ginny sang beautiful renditions of I Don't
Know Where I Stand, Chelsea Morning and Both Sides Now.
Her voice was like honey and just dripped over David and
the bass player Dave's astute performance.
Most of you that have attended Ashara's brilliant gatherings
know of Leslie and Steve's talents. Although I had heard
great things I never had the pleasure of witnessing this
inspirational couple. They played Real Good For Free and
it brought tears to my eyes. Steve was magnificient
and Leslie nailed the vocals. Bravo!
Kay is a great gal who help us neophites with planning our
first trip to NYC. Not only could she be a top notch travel
agent, she could be a headliner! Strange Boy, This Flight
Tonight, both to die for! I was so impressed with both
her playing and singing. You go girl!
The second set brought some new talents to light. Robert Holliston
shot on stage with Julius and Alison to play along with the Joni being
piped through the speakers. This was lots of fun. After that Kay
returned and sang a request from the audience with David accompanying
and Alison on back up for Ladies of the Canyon. This was most exquisite
and it brought the house down.
Alison then wowed us with her version of Coyote, and Bob S. and Alison
teamed up for a rousing rendition of California. Rose's favorite line
about the goat dance was sung with exhuberance.
We were treated to a different rendering of Joni's work by one of
David's freinds Mitch. His versions of Sunny Sunday and Cherokee
Louise put a whole new spin on the songs. Wonderful insite to how
Joni's work can relate to all.
Those of us who own David's CDs already know of his excellence.
To hear him live though...."It's like buttah", as Linda Richman
would say. Not only did he serve up a sumptuous supper but also some
tight jazz that really had the house rockin. The two young men
that he brought in to round out his quartet were quick learners,
having just seen the music and arrangements moments before
taking the stage. Good stuff.
A few thanks while I have the space and bandwidth...
David Lahm, thank you so much for taking the time to put on
an excellent show for us. You were kind and generous beyond
belief and of course I can say nothing bad about your playing...
Kay, Nate and I really appreciate you metaphorically holding
our hands while entering NYC. The guidance you gave us was
superb and helped us avoid the whole "Out of Towners" episode.
Thanks again!
Alison, hostess with the mostess...we are so grateful
for the tour around your adopted city. Jeff too was
very gracious in allowing us to crash at the apartment
and play guitars (badly in my case) regardless of their
value.
Now, in no particular order but please know that I enjoyed
hanging out with y'all....
Rose........You are the woman! Thanks for all of the fun and for
being an excellent driver!
Julius......I will never steal your Pepsi.
Nikki.......I love a girl who looks up to me....literally :-)
Brian......Thank the good lord you are a sound sleeper...didn't want any
Chelsea Morning repeats!!!!
Robert....What a honey you are, I am so sad that we didn't hook up
Sunday....
Patrick...Great to see you again but also, unhappy that we missed you
at dinner :-(
Deb.........How cool that you are going to the UK and hanging with my guys!
you will surely have the time of your life.
Who haven't I mentioned? If I missed someone write and let me know!
I am working on about five hours of sleep and many more miles than I
am used to going in a day. Suffice it to say that it was a joy meeting
all of these new listers and it reminds me of why I hang around this
place to begin with.......All of the TALENT!!!!! I AM NOT WORTHY!!!!!
Take care,
Sue Cameron
