Hi,
I'm new to the list. I'm not sure if it's appropriate to give an introduction,
so I'll keep it fairly Joni-related. I've collected Joni's albums from vinyl
to casstte and now onto CD since 1969: "Clouds" first and then
(retrospectively) "Song to a Seagull" second. Ater that, in chronological
order up to and including "Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm", after which I got more
into classical music, then jazz which has led me full circle back to Joni
again with "Both Sides Now". My all-time favourite Joni songs are "Song for
Sharon" and "Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire".
Unfortunately, until now, I've only ever seen Joni perform live once, when I
was in my teens and she performed at the Isle of Wight Festival (an English
equivalent of Woodstock). I remember her performance was marred by a noisy
helicopter flying overhead, which Joni could nether see nor hear. This
resulted in 100,000+ people booing, jeering and shouting "go away" at the
helicopter. Sadly, Joni thought the boos were aimed at her and started to cry.
My heart and that of the whole audience went out to her. I wonder if Joni ever
found out the real reason why people were booing that day? I hope so. Anyway,
this leads me to my question. there were two big Isle of Wight Festivals,
August '69 when Bob Dylan topped the bill and August '70 when Jimi Hendrix was
the star attraction, and I went to them both, so I'd just like to confirm that
the one I saw Joni at was in 1970. Can anybody out there confirm that, please?
Also, can anybody tell me how many times Joni has played in England? Finally
(lots of questions here), was anybody else on the list at that same Isle of
Wight Festival, because I'm forever trying to remember all of the performers
that I saw and I've never been able to find that info anywhere on the web. I
can remember The Who, ELP, Richie Havens, Tom Paxton, The Band etc, but the
exact line-ups of the '69 and '70 festivals have become kind of blurred into
one big hazy memory.
