I always thought this sounded like one of those 'california-isms' in her
songs (especially on C&S) that pushed me away a little, because I don't
really know what she's on about -- I was about three when the album came
out and live on the other side of the planet.
(california-isms: the beach at Malibu. . . and I could never understand
why she 'couldn't let go of LA/city of the fallen angels. . .)
For me that line was always about Manson (and all the celebrities associated
with his cult. . .) and it always kind of stopped me in my tracks listening
to the song, because it just didn't work for me.
I'm glad to learn about the 'god is dead' interpretation.
