Let me qualify.  I can understand differences in taste.  However, I do
not agree that appreciation is a personal thing.

I'm not a bluegrass fan.  It does not suit my personal taste.  However,
I can listen to bluegrass and appreciate the various levels of
musicianship that different artists present through their music. 
Appreciation to me is being able to tell a good bluegrass artist from a
bad one, even though I don't like bluegrass.
