 I think you're looking at it too literally, or too narrowly. 
Weren't Manson's followers "lost and lonely ones"?
In her reference, they represent in a sense the millions of others who were 
lost and lonely, though certainly not all the lost and lonely ones were 
Manson followers, but many of the lost and lonely ones turned to one cult or 
another during that period, possibly because of dissatisfaction with 
established religion and the feeling that God had abandoned them.
