the incident you refer to happened ages ago. i'm quoting from memory here.
rickie said that joni didn't walk on the ''jazz side of life''. joni replied
by sending a letter to [i think] musician magazine, saying that rickie
reminded her of a neighbor joni had when she was a child. this neighbor came
out of her house with a hatchet and threatened joni every time joni rode her
bicycle past the neighbor's door. there seemed to be a point joni was trying
to make there, but confess i always thought that rickie was the more
stinging of the two.
in any case, i am sure that neither of them remembers this incident [it must
have been in the early 80's]. personally, i think that the world is so much
better because there is a joni mitchell and because there is a rickie lee
jones. joni and rickie have contributed so much to my life as a musician.
