All this talk of But Cort!
I've always liked his work, and I'm really glad that a
couple of people on this list have actuaully seen the
wonderful Brewster McCloud. I have never met anyone in
person who has seen it! Such a strange and funny film,
I've seen it on VHS in older video stores. Definately
worth hunting for.
I also saw the NY Times magazine interview with Bud
Cort. He did seem bitter, and at first I was chalking
it up to his being remembered most for a movie he did
30 years ago. It seems fairly common for someone who
is known for one thing to get tired of constantly
having to talk about it.
Then I recalled that he has had some hard times. I
don't know if I have this right, but I believe that
Bud Cort was in a near-fatal car accident a couple of
years after he made Harold & Maude, right when his
career was taking off. Apperantly his face was left
pretty scarred, forcing him to wear a beard to hide
the scars. His being out of work for a couple of years
of recovery coupled with the decline of his baby-face
looks pretty much ended his career.
Is this story true? It does seem that his career
fizzled out right when it should have taken off.
