This reminded me of a recent humorous (to me) exchange I had with my 17 year
old son. He has evidenced a growing interest in the music of my generation
-thank god the Whitesnake, Quiet Riot days are past- and he was exploring my
old vinyl recordings. His reaction to Joni was basically "great lyrics,
chick music, voice hard to get used to". He pronounced Neil Young "strange
and brilliant".
Then his last comment was "and who is this Melanie chick?" I had to laugh
because I didn't realized until he dragged them out that I must have ALL her
albums. Wow, I remember listening to her for hours on end when I was about
19-20 and pouring out my angst.
But then I discovered Joni.
