Yes, I'm convinced that in Amelia, Joni definitely was making reference to a
hexagram of the I-Ching. It could possibly be Hexagram 1/The Creative. Each
hexagram is made up of a lower and upper trigram consisting in 6 lines in
total.
6 jet planes
6 strings of her guitar

Amelia
by Joni Mitchell
I was driving across the burning desert
When I spotted six jet planes
Leaving six white vapor trails across the bleak terrain
It was the hexagram of the heavens
it was the strings of my guitar

What's interesting about this particular hexagram is a cast of 9 in the 4th
place:
Nine in the fourth place means:
Wavering flight over depths.
No Blame.

A place of transition has been reached, and free choice can enter in. A
twofold possibility is presented to the great man: he can soar to the heights
and play an important part in the world, or he can withdraw into solitude and
develop himself. He can go the way of the hero or that of the holy sage who
seeks seclusion. There is no general law to say which of the two is the right
way. Each one in this situation must make a free choice according to the
inner law of his being. If the individual acts consistently and is true to
himself, he will find the way that is appropriate for him. This way is right
for him and is without blame.

Anyone who has never consulted the I-Ching, there's a neat site that has an
interactive experience at
http://www.floweressences.com/IChing.html
you may have to download Macromedia Shockwave plugin if you don't already
have it.

So go now my little grasshoppers and draw from the spring of wisdom.

Peace,
