I have been reading all this carrying on about whether or not former
presidents' offspring deserve Secret Service protection after they reach
adulthood. My goodness!! I can't believe anyone is making a big deal out of
this - oh, wait I remember now, Clinton!
Living in Texas I guess we are more familiar with George W.'s history. I
distinctly remember a news item in the Dallas Morning News back during the
1992 presidential election (George Sr. was Prez and running for reelection,
remember). Dubya was then "owner"(ha ha ha) of the Texas Rangers - baseball
team, not the law enforcement agency. There was a cute little human
interest story in the sports section about Dubya's stepped up Secret Service
protection - he had 4 agents assigned to him while he was in Florida for
spring training. The article focused on the more amusing aspects of the
situation, agents trying to look unobtrusive in Hawaiian shirts and khaki
shorts, etc. I realize that his father was in office at the time, but it
struck me as very comical that a middle aged man needed G-men to protect him
when the most danger he would ever face was a hard hit foul ball down the
first base line.
Since former presidents' families are entitled to protection, I really can't
see why such flap about Chelsea. Yes, she is an adult, just barely. Her
mother is now a senator. She would seem to be a vulnerable target, and
Secret Service protection is certainly not unjustified in my opinion.
