Yes, Rotorua does smell like rotten eggs, due the the sulphur from the
geothermal activity. It just adds to the ambience!
Napier is one of my favourite cities, I've been there a few times on
holiday, and it is beautiful. The buildings are predominantly art-deco -
there are special tours of the city to show off some of the more spectacular
buildings. The reason there are so many is that Napier was hit by a massive
earthquake in (about) 1932, and most of the central city was demolished.
Since art-deco was the "in" architectural style of the time, that's the
style most of the new buildings were built in.
