I've found the easiest and cheapest way to convert MP3's to WAV files (and 
vice versa) is by using the free MusicMatch program, downloadable at 
http://www.musicmatch.com/download/free/

Exact Audio Copy is probably the best there is for making CDs but, as you 
said, it's not very user friendly.
